French Toast Custard


10 slices dry French bread (l" thick)
5 tbs. melted butter
6 eggs
3 c. milk
1 c. whipping cream
1/2 c. sugar
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1 tbs. vanilla extract
Nutmeg to taste
Confectioners ' sugar to taste (optional)
Brush both sides of bread with butter.
Arrange in greased 9xl3" baking dish.
Whisk eggs in bowl until blended.
Add milk, whipping cream, sugar, ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
and vanilla and mix well. Pour over bread.
Sprinkle lightly with nutmeg to taste.
Chill, covered with foil, for 8 to 10 hours;
remove cover.
Let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes.
Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or
until knife inserted near center comes out clean.
Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
Sprinkle lightly with confectioners' sugar.
Store leftovers, covered, in refrigerator.
Yield: 10 servings.
