Jeanette Stone's Pralines


2 c. sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. buttermilk
2 tsp. vanilla
2 c. pecan halves

Combine sugar, soda and buttermilk in medium pan.
Cook, stirring occasionally.
over moderate heat (250°) until soft ball stage is reached (235°).
Remove from heat and let cool 5 min.
Add vanilla and nuts and beat until slightly thickened.
Drop by tsp. on foil. Let cool.
